TECHNOLOGY UPGRADES FOR OLDER VEHICLES

In-Dash Units Gaining Popularity with Consumers Who Don't Want to Replace Their Older Vehicles

According to IHS Automotive, the average age of a car on the road today is a record-high of 11.5 years old. Additionally, there are 14 million cars on the road that are at least 25 years old – and 44 million that are between 16 to 24 years old.  This means a lot of drivers are going without the latest technology in their cars.

For drivers who want to upgrade the technology in their existing vehicles, replacing the current stereo with an aftermarket stereo is an easy solution. Today’s aftermarket stereos are digital multimedia receivers equipped with smartphone and entertainment features that can turn any vehicle into a smartphone accessory.

Torrance Calif. based Pioneer Electronics has been an industry leader in technology solutions for mobile electronics, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.  The company is currently running a nationwide tour to demo their latest in-dash “NEX” units, showing drivers that you don’t have to break up with your car – just upgrade it.

Rachel is a 23-year old medical assistant who lives at home with her parents.  With mounting student loans and plans for grad school, buying a new car isn’t something she plans to do soon.

“I love this car.  This car has been with my family for 12 years and it doesn’t have some of the capabilities that my parents’ car has or some of my other friends’ car have”, says Rachel.

Rachel is not alone.  Research shows the average car on the road today is 11-and-a-half years old – which means many drivers are going without the latest tech features.

Rachel says, “A lot of my friends have gotten tickets for texting and driving, you know being on the phone while driving and it’s just not safe and it’s just not worth it.”

Consumers faced with limited choices are once again turning to smart technology for help.

Ted Cardenas of Pioneer says that “with today’s smartphone lifestyle consumers want the same access they have on the go, at home, in the gym, they want to be able to take that into their cars as well.”

Many consumers are turning to aftermarket in-dash receivers like this nex series from pioneer, which replaces your factory stereo and functions as a technology upgrade for your existing vehicle.

“It feels familiar because it pulls up all the apps that I already know and love and with Bluetooth I’m able to make phone calls and talk-to-text which has been so unbelievably helpful”, says Rachel.

NAT SOUND: YOUR MESSAGE IS, “WHERE ARE WE GOING FOR LUNCH? READY TO SEND IT”? YES.

“Voice is such an integral part in this. You don’t have to be distracted; you don’t have to take your eyes off the road or the hands off the wheel. You do everything by simply asking for it”, says Ted.

Having a receiver that’s compatible with top music streaming services like spotify pandora and sirius-xm made this an attractive option for rachel.  All at a price she could afford.

Rachel says, “This install was so much cheaper than buying a brand new car”.

Now Rachel has the latest technology and smartphone features, without having to buy a new car.
