Willie Walsh, Director General of the International Air Travel Association (IATA), says the global airline industry will perform better in 2025, but will remain vulnerable to persistent supply chain issues, fuel price increase and geopolitical risks.

Tuesday 10th December 2024, Geneva, Switzerland:

Willie Walsh, Director General of the International Air Travel Association (IATA), says the global airline industry will perform better in 2025, but will remain vulnerable to persistent supply chain issues, fuel price increase and geopolitical risks.

Although global revenue will top $1 trillion for the first time in the industry’s history, profits per passenger are still wafer thin. Profits per passenger on average are predicted to increase slightly to average around $7 per passenger. Passenger numbers are set to reach another all-time high of around 5 billion people travelling, however, supply chain issues, increasing airport costs and air traffic management issues will have a huge impact on the industry.

Other potential risks to the industry include increasing fuel costs because of geopolitical events such as the conflict in Ukraine as well as the costs associated with decarbonisation ahead of impending net zero targets. He also directly calls out the incoming Trump administration as a potential risk to net zero targets depending on the new administration’s stance on climate change.
