FPA AWARDS VNR

What stories are winning journalism prizes and who is making them?

Syria, Gaza, FIFA, football, Russia, Pakistan, India, Nigeria, Romania, Sudan, Lebanon…

The annual Foreign Press Association in London Media Awards were held on the evening of Tuesday 29 November.

The Awards are among the most prestigious awards' ceremonies for journalism in the world.

They are now in their seventeenth year and a well established feature of the international media calendar.

Dedicated to excellence in journalism, the FPA Media Awards present a unique opportunity for British journalists to be celebrated and recognised by their international peers. However they also attract an ever-increasing number of entries from many of the world's major broadcasters, newspapers and news magazines.
The standard of entries is high and the competition intense.

The ongoing tragedy of the Syrian conflict and the harrowing story of thousands of refugees risking their lives to reach Europe and make a new life for themselves loomed large in this year's list of winners. To quote just two: Marcel Mettelsiefen and Stephen Ellis's "Children on the frontline: The Escape" for Channel 4. Also, Sky News' s Lisa Holland and Mostyn Pryce's "Rescue in the Aegean".

A worthy winner of the Sports Story of the Year was Andrew Jennings who is an inspiration to many journalists for his extraordinary perseverance and dogged determination investigating Fifa and Sepp Blatter for over 15 years and helping the CIA with evidence on the serious mismanagement of funds by FIFA, in BBC TV's  "Panorama: "Fifa, Sepp Blatter and me" .

In a break with tradition, the FPA decided for the first time to extend its recognition to a non-member of the press. Its guest of honour and keynote speaker, Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan became the first recipient of its Humanitarian of the Year award , for her extraordinary work in support of refugees.

The guest list is made up of 400 influential senior members of the British and international media, UK politicians, business leaders, foreign government representatives and other leading opinion makers.
