COLLEGE PARK BY THE NUMBERS: DRESSEL SHATTERS POINTS, MONEY RECORDS

Over 100 Olympians are represented by the ISL, including 41 Olympic gold medals from the 2016 Olympic Games.

The International Swimming League’s US Derby match turned out to be arguably the most exciting we’ve seen so far this season. The LA Current narrowly edged out the Cali Condors in the meet-ending, triple-points skins races in what was a dramatic affair in College Park, Maryland.

In the skins event, where the field is halved after each of 3 rounds of 50 freestyles until just 2 are left in the finale, the Current and the Condors each won a race, but it was the Current who had enough to take the meet title.

The Current put up 495 points to the Condors’ 489.5, giving them their first victory of the ISL season. Those two clubs have now solidified their spot in December’s League Final in Las Vegas, both finishing with nine points in the standings. The Condors cumulative point total of 1,437 puts them officially in first place among the American clubs, but that only impacts bragging rights as both will go through to the finale.

The DC Trident and NY Breakers were locked in a close battle throughout the match as well until the Trident ultimately emerged with a third place finish by 7.5 points.

Despite Cali’s match loss, their captain Caeleb Dressel had the best performance we’ve seen so far this season, compiling an ISL record 61.5 MVP points to become the first swimmer to win multiple MVP awards. Dressel held the previous single match point record with 57.5 from Naples.

The LA Current had an outstanding showing from Beryl Gastaldello, who became the third swimmer to score more than 50 points in an ISL match (joining Dressel and Energy Standard’s Sarah Sjostrom) with 51.5. In her last match in Budapest, Gastaldello scored 20 fewer points (31.5). The French native won five individual events, like Dressel, taking the women’s 50 free, 100 free, 50 back, 50 fly, and the match-ending skins. DC’s Siobhan Haughey was the fourth-highest point-scorer, and New York’s Michael Andrew was fifth, marking the first time in five matches all four clubs were represented within the top-5 scorers.

As was outlined prior to the match, the LA Current came in with a formidable men’s team, and the Cali Condors had the strongest women’s team. In the end, Cali’s women scored the most points of any single gender with 261.5, but the difference-maker for LA was their women, who outscored the Condor men by 22 to lead them to victory. The Trident men were the key for them taking third, putting 29 more points on the board than the Breakers.

As expected after his record-breaking point total, Dressel sets a new all-time mark in the ISL with $19,700 won in prize money. Gastaldello was second with $12,600, becoming the third woman in the ISL to crack $10K in one match after Sjostrom and Iron’s Katinka Hosszu. Lilly King and Michael Chadwick both ranked significantly higher in the prize money standings than they did in points. This was due to King having four wins between individual and relays, and Chadwick getting a big boost from his runner-up finish in the men’s skins.
